Jorvan Vieira will coach Iraq’s national football team for West Asia Cup, Asia Cup finals in June and July. AMMAN - Iraq has signed up Brazilian Jorvan Vieira as their new coach for the West Asia Cup and the Asia Cup finals in June and July, Iraqi Football Association president Hussein Saeed said early Thursday. "It's a return to the Brazilian school which contributed in taking the Iraq national team to the World Cup finals in Mexico in 1986," Saeed said after the midnight signing ceremony in the Jordanian capital, Amman. Vieira, 53, declined to divulge the financial details of the two-month contract he signed with the Iraqi FA. "It is not about money. It's a personal message that I want to address to the Iraqi people aimed at putting a smile on their lips," Vieira said. Iraqi FA secretary general Ahmad Abbas said earlier this week in Baghdad that Vieira could renew his contract with Iraq depending on the results the team achieves in the West Asia and Asia Cup finals. The West Asia tournament will be played in Jordan June 16-24 while the Asia Cup finals are slated to take place in four southeast Asian countries from July 7-29. Iraq sacked coach Akram Ahmed Salman in April, just three months ahead of the Asian Cup finals after the team's poor showing in the Gulf Cup in January. Salman has been "released from his responsibilities," the Iraqi FA said in a statement at the time. The Iraqi FA accepted the recommendation of a fact-finding committee which conducted a two-month-long investigation into the team's Gulf Cup performance, during which Iraq failed to get past the group stages in a tournament won by hosts United Arab Emirates. In December, Iraq reached the final of the Asian Games for the first time in 20 years. Vieira is not a newcomer to the Arab region. He has coached the Saudi Al Tai Club since 2006 and before that trained several regional teams, including Oman's Al Nasr Club and several teams in Morocco. | |
